Week 14...
Monday 13/12/10
Today I started setting up a shoot for my tension and movement project. I decided to go and buy a ball of string and unravel it during my shoot. I was at home so I set up a mini light and put tracing paper over it to diffuse the light.Below are some of the images I took for this shoot.
Above is another image I have taken , I prefer this image to my first one as I think there is more interest in this image then the first one. I also like the compsition of the image.
Wednesday 15/12/10
Today I looked at editing my pictures. I decided that the pictures would look a lot better if they were in black and white.Below are some of the images I have edited for my final pieces.
This is one of the pictures that I have taken and then turned in to black and white. I am quite happy with this photograph as the lighting is subtle and theres more interest than just a ball of string.
This is another one of the pictures I have turned in to black and white. The only thing I like about this image is the lighting. I dont think the picture works as a whole but if I were to retake this image I would use a proper studio and make sure all the string fills the photograph.

Here is one of the first images I took using the mock up studio in my living room. I like this picture because of the lighting on the ball of string. I like how the subtle the light is. However, if I could take this picture again , I wish I could change where the ball is on the picture as I think it would look better if it was in the centre of the photograph.

Again , like the image above this is one of my least favourite photographs.
Overall with this project I do not think this was my strongest idea. I think the concept of it would be good if the rope was found somewhere rather than me buying the string myself.I think the mock up studio was a good idea as I got to work with techniques that I learnt in previous weeks with Rob in the studio.
However, if I were to do this project again , I would consider doing a different project than this, I would pick something that still relates to my work , but has more scope for mw to improve my work.
Week 13...
Week 13 06/12/11...
After discussing our work from the last project we were given our next brief. Tension and Movement. At first when I thought about this brief I didn't have a clue what I was going to do . All I knew was that I wanted to keep the theme of thread in my work.
Here is another example of rope photography. This one is more literally than the one about , however I do still enjoy the image. I like the contrasting colour of the ring to the surrounding area.
Again , I DO NOT own any of the pictures I have got from different websites , I am using them soley for the purpose of research to further my own work.

08/12/11...
I decided that I would look at the oposite of tension. In the form of threads and ropes. I wanted to keep to my on going theme of stiching in to pictures , however I wanted the thread I stitch with to be the subject of my photographs , not the effect of it has on the photographs afterwards.
although I did discuss with Kate the possibility of stiching in to my pictures again , but then ripping the stich up and pinning it somehow so that it would show the tension in the presentation of the photographs.
I started to look at how ropes are used in photography and how they are presented.
Below are some examples of the work that I have been looking at on the theme of ropes.
I liked this image the first time I saw it. I think the detail is beautiful to look at and other all it is an image that stands out to me. I like the focus of this image , it draws the eye straight to the centre of the image as the background is very out of focus.

Week 12...
Week 12 29/11/10...
Quick Blog for this week!
Today I spent the day creating more pinholes. I decided to keep to the same place as I have been doing for this porject. However , I started to discuss with Kate the possibilities of adding more pin holes to my pinhole camera to see what the effect would be.
However I decided against doing this this time round as I was more focussed on getting an actual image, rather than risking spoilng my pinhole camera.
Health and Safety - Be careful where you put your pinhole , or you might just get someone knocking it off whilst it's taking the picture.

Week 11...
Monday 22/11/10...
In the morning we had to present our work from the last project and talk to each other about our work and how we can imporve and what everything thinks of it , once our tutorial was over we were given the next brief project which is multiples. Below is a link to the project brief for this project.
When I first sat down and thought about this projct I couldn't think of many ideas. I didn't know which direction to take or what I should photograph. I knew I wanted to use my sewing skills within my final piece to incorporate it in to costume design.
Wednesday 24/11/10...
Today we did a workshop with Kate on pinholes. We had to bring a pinhole in and spend the day taking images with our lenseless cameras. I decided I wanted to keep my pictures looking quite old fashioned , and just outside of the dark room there are some iron bars which look quite old , behind the bars is the college building on Greek Street which has some interesting architecture. I left my camera wedged on a wall so it was safe from falling.
Once I had gotten all the timing right , ( which was 3 minutes ) my pictures began to develop. I decided to keep looking at different angles of the same place to see what would look best. Once I had finished for the day I had a collecton of pinhole images which looked interesting and delicate.
I looked at ways in which I could distort my pinholes , some of the least successful ones I decided to burn, I liked the way the photographed bubbled and created an fragile image in its own right.
Above is one of my pinholes which hasn't been edited. I used a small box as my pinhole camera and so the picture is only very small.I like the feel of this image, it looks like an old victorian photograph the way it is framed. After seeing this picture I began to look at victorian photographs.
Once I had got some pinhole images I decided to start inverting them so they looked like realy photographs.
Below is one of my pinholes inverted, as you can see there are some striking similarities when comparing this photograph to the Victorian one.
I am quite happy with this pinhole as a final image , however, I would like to experiment with using different medias on top of this photograph to see what effects it can create.
Friday 26/11/10...
Today with Rob we did a workshop about lighting. We learnt about how to use lighting and how different lighting can change a photograph. We also looked at ways of changing the light , by using filters to create softer lighting.
I decided to take photographs using this technique of two badges I own. I decided to use both these badges as they are tiny and looked good close up.
Below is an image of my badges
This is with using lighting , I wanted the viewers eyes to be drawn to the center of the image and then realise about the light , however , I don't think it stood out enough so I carried on editing it in photoshop , I looked at using different filters and then found cross processing. Cross processing was orginally used in film photography were two different chemicals were added together to give a different look once the photographs were printed. However there is also a filter for the same effect on photoshop. Below is the image with the cross processing on it .

Week 10...
Monday 15/11/10...
Today we met the rest of our group, and after an ice breaker we were given out project brief for the week.
The project for this week is hidden stories ( see link for project sheet below). When I first thought about the brief I coudn't decide what exactly to do. I had many ideas in my head and to pick one way to go was very difficult for me.
However , I had decided to go with my gut instinct which was to do a forensic project. I was thinking of my brother and his friends. They are at my house every night , however once they have left we know someone has been there and this was the angle which I wanted my photographs to take. I wanted the viewer to look at the photographs and even though they can't actually see someone there , they know something has taken place.

Wednesday 17/11/10...
I started looking at forensic photography in its own right and looking at the way things are photographed. Personally, I have always been fasinated with forensice photography and crime work so I loved looking at the style of photography and trying to create a similar vibe.
I spoke to Rob about what I had in mind for my project and he said it was a good idea , he tried to challenge me to think about what I could do to improve my work and how I could take this further given the chance. I came up with the idea that I could if I was to go further with this topic think about making individual "evidence" files which would include a mugshot of my brother and his friends , and little bit about their personalities and what their habits are and then more pictures of the mess they leave behind in my house.
My inspiration for this came from a site with the following picture on it...
Furthermore , below is an image for an example of the forensic images I looked at...
The image above is from an actual crime scene. You can look at the photograph and the article that comes with it at 'http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2008/03/page/3/' .PLEASE NOTE. (I do not on this photograph, it has been used soley for the purpose of developing my own work and researching in to crime scene photography)
Friday 19/11/10...
First thing in the morning we had tutorial with Rob, he talked to us all about our work and what we will be doing until Christmas , he explained to use about the studio and how we get equipment out and he also talked to us about what we know and what we don't know about photography.
Once we had gone through all the information from his side of the course, he then began to talk to us all about our own work and how it is progressing.
Once we had finished for the day I set about taking the photographs for my own work. Most of my brother friends come to our house on a Friday and Saturday night , so I had two night in which to photograph what they have been doing.
I started of by looking at their shoes which were all lined up in a row , but I decided that really these pictures lacked interest and so I went in to my brothers bedroom to look at what they had done that evening. I found a lot of pizza boxes around which I thought looked interesting , I also found a lot of beer cans stacked up which looked amusing considering they were pretty much all from one person.
Once I had finished taking my photographs I looked at them on my computer to see if any of them needed editing. I decided to put them all in black and white so that they look more realistic . I also added a lot of contrast to them to make them look more dramatic.
Below is one of my final images I used for this project .
Overall I am happy with this project. I think that didn't do the obvious by going with my gut instinct, however I do think there are ways I could improve. Firstly, I think I could have taken more pictures , I do not think I had enough pictures to be able to pick 9 best images, so , if I was able to retake these pictures again , I would and I would think more outside the box , I wouldn't just consider using the first thing that sprang to mind. Secondly, I would like to continue possibly looking in to making the evidence folders with the mugshot , however this could prove problematic as all my brothers friends wont let me take pictures of them properly. But , I am happy with the way this project went in the time I had to do it.
